Bacterial Vaginosis, or BV, is an infection caused by an upset of the balance of the good and bad bacteria located in the vagina. Normally the good bacteria keeps the bad bacteria in check. But when that delicate balance is disturbed, that is when problems arise. When the bad bacteria outnumbers the good, an infection occurs.
What are the Symptoms?
Symptoms of Bacterial Vaginosis are a greyish white, sometimes thin discharge with a "fishy" odor, as well as burning, itching, and irritation of the vagina. It is often more noticeable after sex.
Typically, a diagnosis of Bacterial Vaginosis will be made after conducting a wet mount, or "whiff" test. A sample of vaginal discharge is taken from inside the vagina using a swab. Then placing it on a slide. Potassium hydroxide is then added to the sample. The tell tale fishy smell suggests that it is BV. Other tests performed include a check of the ph level and makeup of cells in the vaginal fluid.
What are the Causes of Bacterial Vaginosis?
It is important to note that Bacterial Vaginosis is not considered a sexually transmitted infection. However it is associated with having a new partner or multiple partners. Other factors include the use of scented or deodorant soaps, and the use of douches or feminine hygiene sprays. These only serve to cover up the problem, as well as make it worse.
Treatments Available
Bacterial Vaginosis can be treated orally (with pills you take by mouth)or vaginally (with a gel or cream inserted into the vagina). The two most common antibiotics used to treat this are metronidazole, and clindamycin. These must be prescribed by a doctor.
Unfortunately, Most Women Will Have Repeat Bacterial Vaginosis Infection
Why? Well, it's not really known. Even if you take the above stated precautions, there is a good chance that your Bacterial Vaginosis will return. So what do you do then? It is emotionally and mentally draining to keep having to make an appointment with your doctor just to get a prescription. And that's also time away from work or school, or your family.
